A New School In Georgia Offers LGBT Students A Safe Haven From Bullying

A new private school in Georgia that wants to provide a safe space for LGBT students, Pride School Atlanta, will open this fall. It will be the first school of its kind in the state and models itself after the Harvey Milk school in New York, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The K-12 school — founded by Christian Zsilavetz, a trans teacher with 25 years of experience in the classroom — will serve both LGBT students and cis straight students who may feel out of place. It’s an especially important resource given its location, according to some LGBT advocates, because LGBT youth living in the South and the Midwest often feel like they won’t be able to find support in their hometowns.

This Scholarship Is Sending A Message Of Acceptance To Rural LGBT Students

Last summer, Jacob Wilson began raising money for graduating seniors at his former high school in Missouri. The scholarship was made for students who have shown they will advance the lives of LGBT people and other groups that have faced discrimination.

Nebraska’s Aggressive New Plan To Keep Transgender Students From Playing Sports

The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) has been wrestling with what to do with transgender athletes for years. In December of 2012, the NSAA quietly opened the door for transgender students to play for the teams that match their gender identities, but its latest policy proposal places several hurdles into the process, some of which are likely to be insurmountable. In fact, the policy segregates the locker room usage of almost every transgender student who would take advantage of it, which is quite likely a violation of federal law.
